About Stephen

Stephen B. Kaufman is dedicated to serving the people - as a practicing attorney, elected official, and concerned citizen of the Bronx. Born and raised there, he graduated from Stuyvesant High School and attended Hunter College for his undergrad. He received his law degree from The Washington College of Law at American University.

Stephen started his career in the Bronx with the district attorney, and then as law secretary for a Civil Court Judge in the Bronx. In 1974, he was elected to the New York City Council, proudly serving Throggs Neck and Co-Op City neighborhoods for 14 years. He made the jump to the state level in 1988 when he was elected to the State Assembly in New York, and in 18 years held leadership roles including Assistant Majority Whip, Chair of the Administrative Regulations Review Commission and Chair of the Election Law Committee. The Bronx has always been the most important place for him, and starting Stephen B. Kaufman, P.C. has been a lifelong pursuit. He has served many municipal positions within the Bronx, including as the Co-Chair of the Pelham Bay Landfill Task Force, and the chair of both The Bronx Israel Bond Drive and the Bronx United Jewish Appeal. As of now, he is president of the Throggs Neck Merchants Association and involved in many other projects in the Bronx aimed at helping the people of the borough. His entire life has been devoted to serving the people of the Bronx and trying to make a positive impact on his community. His connection to the place he was born and raised in helps him in providing the best possible legal counsel.
